A prayer for Authentic Hopeful Action (AHA!)

–          In preparation for 2 December at UWC

O God of deep love, God of surprises

God of creativity and playfulness….

Like an artist,

you have created us all in your wonderful image

And infused us with your breath of life-in-all-its-fulness

For goodness, for joy, for freedom….yes, child-like….

To fully experience your reign of joy

You have not made us for eternal misery, despair or violence

Forgive us wherever we have succumbed to this false gospel….

Help us to lament…

Your cross is the everlasting symbol of victory over death, violence and deception

Your resurrection is the eternal message of life and hope

Bring us all to a greater awareness of this….

Exhale your Spirit once again so that we may fully inhale it

To live lives of authentic hopeful action…

So that we may, once again, experience your AHA moment!

- Umthandazo Wexesha lezenzo ezithembekileyo ezinyanisekileyo (AHA!)

’n AHA!-gebed

–          In voorbereiding op 2 Desember by UWK

O God van innige liefde, God van verrassings

God van kreatiwiteit en humor

Soos ’n kunstenaar

Disturb us, O Lord

(This prayer is attributed to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu adapted from an original prayer by Sir Francis Drake)

Disturb us, O Lord

when we are too well-pleased with ourselves when our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little, because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, O Lord

when with the abundance of things we possess, we have lost our thirst for the water of life when, having fallen in love with time, we have ceased to dream of eternity and in our efforts to build a new earth, we have allowed our vision of Heaven to grow dim.

Stir us, O Lord

to dare more boldly, to venture into wider seas where storms show Thy mastery, where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars.

In the name of Him who pushed back the horizons of our hopes and invited the brave to follow.

Amen

Surprise us,  O Lord

Surprise us o Lord

When we think we have you all figured out

When we no longer have the spirit of the child

When we are so impatient that we no longer believe in surprises

SUPRISE US O LORD

When we think that all created things can be explained without you

When we think that the small I am can be divorced from the great I AM

When we attempt to create even you in our own image

HELP US O LORD

To experience you as the God of surprises

To spur us on to envision your kingdom

Where you are with all and in all

This we ask in the Name of the God who surprised us

By making himself one with us

And no longer calling us servants

But calling us friends

(Edwin Arrison)

Prayer for Climate Change

In the morning:
May we live this day in love –
for ourselves
for one another
and for our planet.

In the evening:
Thank you …
that we lived this day in love –
for ourselves
for one another
and for our planet.

(Susan Groves)

Celtic blessing

Deep peace of the running wave to you;

deep peace of the flowing air to you;

deep peace of the quiet earth to you;

deep peace of the shining stars to you;

deep peace of the Son of Peace to you.
