MEDITATION: This is our little secret
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? (Matthew 6:26)
The aeroplane was about to land after eleven long hours in the air.
I had gone for a last quick stroll to the back of the aeroplane, close to where the toilets and kitchen were, when she suddenly appeared in her blue uniform. She was one of the many airhostesses who served us throughout the night.
Although aware that I might see her, she did not seem to care. She continued to do what she came for, this time not to prepare food and drinks for the passengers, but to switch her shoes. Opening an obscure cupboard somewhere above our heads, she carefully took out a pair of neat high heel shoes which, so it became clear, was stowed there for this specific moment. And then kicking off the old shoes that she wore throughout the night, she carefully started to put on these more decent shoes.
It was only after finishing this ritual that she eventually turned to me smilingly and, while pointing to the cupboard and the shoes, remarked almost mischievously:
“This is our little secret. We also have to live a ladylike life out there.”
With these two short sentences this unknown airhostess expressed a deep seated need that most people have. That is to go out into the world and to live a decent and dignified life. A life in which you may lift up your head each day, knowing: “I am worth something. I never need to feel inferior or bad about myself, no matter who I am or what work I do. As a human being I am always special.”
Not all people feel this way. Because of bad choices or circumstances, many are wounded in their dignity, have no self confidence or feel inferior and unappreciated. But how we feel about ourselves does of course never nullify God’s view of us.
According to the Bible we remain special in God’s eyes, notwithstanding our mistakes or status. Therefore we are people who, metaphorically speaking, may today again put on our high heel shoes and walk with dignity and pride in the world. Because we are God’s beloved children.
Our lives are, in the words of Jesus, of more value than those of the birds of the air (Matt 6:26).
That is the profound secret of your life.
