MEDITATION: His light shines in our darkness

In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:4)

During a recent talk on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, the well known pilgrims’ route in Spain, a woman movingly recalled how the peregrinos – the Spanish word for pilgrims – constantly support and help each other on this tedious journey.

And it often happens quietly, without a big fuss or any unhealthy pretentions.

Like the one evening when she, after a long day’s walk, got lost and could not find the well known emblem of the open shell that serves as a path finding sign. But then, while she was growing more anxious, there was suddenly someone beside her.

Without saying a word, the person just switched on his torch, letting its beam fall on the sign of the shell, hidden in the darkness just a few yards away from her. And that was enough. She suddenly knew where she was and where she had to go.

Her story reminds us of the so called Easter stories. We should read them more often. Most of them are about people, followers of Jesus, who after his tragic death, were perplexed and anxious – also disheartened and unsure about the future.  People who, like this woman, had lost their way in the gloom and darkness that had suddenly descended upon them.

And then Jesus appeared and a light started to shine in their darkness. New perspective, insight and hope, also joy, sprang up. The road ahead suddenly became more clear and negotiable.

They were so excited – they just had to tell others about this light, even if they did not want to listen or see.

But this is the message of Easter: Jesus has risen! He, the light of the world, is with us. And this Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness – whatever that may be in your life today – has not and will never overcome it.

Never ever!
